Everyone has heard of acne in general terms, but not everyone is familiar with cystic acne. The causes of cystic acne are much like any other type, but the symptoms are quite different. This form of acne appears as deep infections that are cyst-like and can be quite painful. Cystic acne does not present itself in the same form as an average pimple. Instead, it becomes large and resides beneath the skin and does not discharge it's infection, whereas typical acne raises to the surface. Cystic acne derives from an infection that is trapped deep within the skin, which is why it never actually surfaces.
The causes of cystic acne often include a hormonal imbalance, increased stress, oily skin, using certain oil based products on the face and/or a family history of acne. Many believe that improper hygiene is one of the leading causes of cystic acne, but this is simply not the case. While it is certainly a good idea to cleanse the face regularly, cystic acne does not present itself because you forget to wash your face one night before you go to bed. Instead, it is more likely that the leading causes of cystic acne are related to much more complicated issues.
One of the least recognized, but extremely accurate causes of cystic acne remains to be that of heredity. If acne was problematic to either one or both of your parents, or if there is a family history of acne presence, you may be more likely to battle with the same problem.
If you notice the development of cystic acne, the most important thing to do is to avoid touching the problem area. Not only can this be painful to the touch, but you do not want to break the skin as this may lead to possible scarring or infection. Your fingernail bed is a haven for bacteria, which can enter the opening of broken skin. If this should happen, there is an increased likelihood for infection and also an increased probability that the cystic acne will become larger and worsen in it's appearance. Aggravating the problematic skin is one of the more obvious causes of cystic acne.
