Back acne, which is commonly referred to as bacne, is a growing problem among both teens and adults. The causes range from tight-fitting clothes that trap perspiration and bacteria against your skin to failing to shower after a workout, which allows oily buildup to remain on the skin. Regular showering, including immediately after workouts, and a quality exfoliation product to remove the dead and dry skin cells will help to prevent bacne.

Bacne can be treated in a number of ways, including exfoliation, cleansing the back with a loofah sponge and/or applying a benzoyl peroxide treatment to the affected area(s). For extreme cases of bacne, which does not respond to any of the aforementioned treatments, a more aggressive approach may be needed. A visit to the dermatologist is often arranged in the event of moderate to severe bacne cases. A dermatologist, who is educated in the treatment of skin-related illnesses, can assess the patient's condition and recommend a proper remedy. Either an oral or topical treatment will be recommended, which includes the use of pills or a creme-based product that is applied directly to the skin's surface.

It is important to treat bacne early due, in part, because of it's potential for infection. If oil or bacteria becomes continually trapped against the skin as a result of clothing, there is an increased likelihood of developing an infection. In addition, bacne may result in scarring and the sooner it is treated, the less noticeable any scars will be.

While a dermatologist is often consulted for moderate to severe cases of bacne, it is important to note that regular physicians may also be able to assist in milder cases. When attempting to make an appointment with a dermatologist or physician, the wait can be lengthy. For this reason, it is perfectly fine to first make an appointment with your local family physician for a prompt diagnosis and treatment. If the bacne is severe, or if the physician feels that a dermatologist would be better equipped to handle the patient's care, he/she may be able to expedite an appointment by contacting a dermatologist directly.
