An acne keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue, which is a direct result of acne. While it is true that most will flatten and become less obvious with time, an acne keloid can quickly become irritated by simply rubbing the area on clothing or other friction. Acne is a problem facing many individuals and, even after the red bumps are gone, some still suffer with the after effects. This may include scarring and ultimately an acne keloid.

Anyone who notices the presence of an acne keloid is urged to refrain from exposing it to the sun during it's first year of existence. The reason is because the sun may cause the acne keloid to tan at a darker coloration than the rest of the skin and, much to their disappointment, many individuals find that the keloid will retain it's dark coloration permanently.

An acne keloid can appear at any place that acne is, or has been, present. This may include the face, neck, shoulders, back and/or chest area. A condition known as Keloidosis is recognized when multiple keloids are produced. Just as with scars, there are treatments for an acne keloid. Home remedies are not likely to work, but professional medical treatments may. This could include chemical peels, laser treatments, dermabrasion, etc. The treatments used to remove an acne keloid would likely be much the same as those used to remove a simple acne scar.

The ultimate treatment for an acne keloid will be determined on a number of factors, including the age of the patient, his/her overall health and past medical history, the severity of the acne keloid and the prognosis of any treatment method being successful. Because an acne keloid will become less noticeable over a period of several years, some physicians may recommend leaving the area as it is unless the development is severe, multiple or proves to be uncomfortable to the patient. In addition, many patients consider medical treatments very carefully as they can quickly add up financially.
