One of the most widely used acne treatments is that of acne chemical peels. As the name implies, a chemical peel results in the top layer of skin being literally peeled away with the use of a chemical application. This process is used to minimize scars and, as the top layer of skin is removed during acne chemical peels, the underlaying skin is allowed to regenerate. This will typically result in an improved appearance.
For those who are not familiar with acne chemical peels, this procedure is actually one that provides both the physician and patient with great control. The physician can determine the degree and depth of the damaged skin, which will give him/her an advantage in deciding how to proceed. Acne chemical peels can actually be used with varying concentrations, which means a higher concentration for a deeper peel and a lesser concentration for a less intrusive peel. If the skin is extremely damaged, deep acne chemical peels may be needed.
Following acne chemical peels, patients can expect to experience some degree of peeling and flaking on the treated area. In addition, some reddening may be present as the skin returns to it's normal coloration after the peel. Before deciding to continue with acne chemical peels, the patient will want to have a detailed discussion with their physician in order to make sure that acne chemical peels are the best method of treatment.
Tips of Acne Chemical Peels
There are a number of chemical peels, which are available for varying degrees of repair. If the skin is extremely damaged, a more aggressive approach with acne chemical peels may be needed. In mild to moderate cases, light acne chemical peels may be used. In this instance, the possible irritation is less than with other peels and is especially designed for oily or acne-prone skin. It is important to consult with a physician regarding possible skin irritation, which may vary from one individual to another. Anyone with sensitive skin may be more susceptible to irritation than others but, again, this determination can only be made by a physician.
