A condition known as acne keloidalis nuchae develops as a result of ingrown hairs located on the back of the head and neck. As they grow into the skin, they become inflamed and cause scar tissue. This ailment typically begins following a short haircut and can often be avoided by the barber taking special care to not cut the hair too short.

Acne keloidalis nuchae is a condition most commonly found in men because they generally have shorter hair, but may also be a problem for women who choose to wear their hair in a very short style that is close to the neck.

The treatment of acne keloidalis nuchae includes the use of antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possible injections. If larger lesions of acne keloidalis nuchae do not respond to treatment, they may need to be surgically removed. In most instances, it will be often necessary to prevent the regrowth with a deep and widely precisioned removal and the healing process may take weeks or even months.

If acne keloidalis is diagnosed early, some cases may be treated through laser hair removal. This is especially true if an individual realizes that he/she is prone to this condition and is thereby able to catch it early. In order for laser treatments to properly work with acne keloidalis nuchae, the condition must not have reached the advanced stages, which will often require surgery.

In addition, laser hair removal may actually prevent acne keloidalis nuchae from recurring. Not all cases will require surgery, however, as there are topical creams to help treat and prevent the inflammation. These often require prescriptions and must be approved by a physician.

In severe cases of acne keloidalis nuchae, the hair around the infected area may be permanently lost. Treatments are designed around the intent to prevent the hair from becoming ingrown, which will ultimately prevent the development of acne keloidas nuchae. One way to prevent the occurrence is to make sure the hair is a minimum of 1/4" in length as anything less may be too close of a cut and could leave the individual susceptible to acne keloidalis nuchae.
